ALB Conference 2015This is the second such conference being organised by ALB/Thomson Reuters on Data Protection following the successful event a year ago. I spoke in a panel session last year, and will be speaking again this time. The conference will be on Thursday, 7th May 2015 at the JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur.

Keynotes will be delivered by Trevor Hughes, President of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP); Dr. Zainal Abidin Sait, Deputy Director-General of the Personal Data Protection Malaysia Department (PDPD); and Prof. Abu Bakar Munir, who was the Data Protection Consultant to the Malaysian Government.

My panel session is the one slotted at 16:10, focusing on “Data protection in the era of Big Data, the Internet of Things (IoT) & cloud computing,” covering the Jurisdiction and marketplace: Asia Pacific, EU and US.

More specifically we will talk about the privacy challenges arising from Internet of Things (IoT): Overview of the Article 29 Working Party opinion, the Mauritius Declaration and the Resolution on Big Data. The discussion will be further directed to finding some practical recommendations for device manufacturers, application developers, social platforms, data recipients, data platforms and standardisation bodies. The speakers look at how to ensure your cloud contract helps manage privacy and internet security-related risks, how to enforce your company’s technical and organisational standards with Cloud Service Providers (CSPs); and the need for security/privacy controls, audit right clauses and subcontracting restrictions, as well as to evaluating the potential for international standards.

I will be joined in the panel session by several other distinguished speakers: May-Ann Lim, Executive Director, Asia Cloud Computing Association; Annelies Moens, Co-Founder and former President, International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) Australia and former Deputy Director, Compliance, Office of the Federal Privacy Commissioner Australia; Head of Sales & Operations, Information Integrity Solutions (IIS); Chee Wan Law, Manager, Technical, Trend Micro Malaysia; and will be moderated by Mr. Victor Tan Hock Kim, Assistant Professor, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman.
