Data Protection Law: How It Affects Me at Work

By: Sonny Zulhuda

This is a talk for the IIUM Community and beyond (because it is streamed live on the ITD IIUM official YouTube channel) that has been planned for quite some time. The event is organised by the Information Technology Division (ITD) of IIUM, and will be opened by my IT guru Prof. Dato. Dr. Norbik Bashah Idris. He is a professor in the Kulliyyah of ICT, IIUM and is the Chief Information/Digital Officer of IIUM. The day is Tuesday, 5th September 2023 at 14.30 MYT.

In this talk, I will first share the general trend of data processing and data breaches – globally and in Malaysia. And will certainly look into incidents affecting the higher education institutions. Needless to say, from Malaysian news we will have a series of interesting stories about data breaches to look at, including those affected public and private universities.

I will also share with the audience the fundamental features of PDPA 2010 including the latest cases from Malaysian courts. I will discuss why PDPA 2010 compliance matters to all of us, both professionally and personally. Certainly, something concrete should follow from this talk. That is why I will get the participants to understand general compliance issues in the University context and for them to identify the next course of action for the IIUM community to take and implement.

I would like to share here what our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has to say about today’s data processing:

“The collection of data by any organisation or government without an expressly stated objective leaves said data highly vulnerable to abuse and represents a clear and dangerous dereliction of duty on the part of the collectors.”

Very precise, concise and forward-looking words by the Chief, indeed!

As usual, I will share with the participants the slides of my presentation. Don’t worry, I also mean this for anyone who wishes to hear or see what I have to share. Just click here for the slides and enjoy (I hope you do!).
