Embracing (Smart) the Industrial Revolution 5.0

By: Sonny Zulhuda

This theme was chosen at this National Seminar on Information Technology (TEKNOKA-8) held by the Faculty of Information Technology, Universitas Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka (UHAMKA), Jakarta, Indonesia. This top Indonesia private university invited me to share my thoughts about such a topic.

But we haven’t done with the I.R 4.0, have we? I don’t think we should worry about the counting. It is more a digital jargon than conceptual terminology. While the theorists of information science may differ, my main message here is we should, as members of the Indonesian information society collectively, be ready and resilient to embrace and live by the changes and challenges brought about by digitalisation and the datafication process.

One of those changes that are now knocking our doors is the new norm of data processing. Due to the emerging risks of datafication and the increasing awareness of those risks, data processing (especially that involves personally identifiable information) is now more regulated than ever. In Indonesia, the norm is newly set by the new Law No. 27/2022 on Personal Data Protection. This legislation is arguably the most important legislation that will set new norms and new benchmarks in data governance reform in Indonesia. Everyone involved in the data processing – professionally, commercially, or otherwise, will need to have some fundamental knowledge in this.
