Legal Lab, Legal Clinic and Students’ Development

By: Sonny Zulhuda

Lab or Laboratory is a ”place for practice, observation, or testing.” Meanwhile, a legal lab shall mean a place, institution or programme where law students (and teachers) create or find opportunities to gain direct experience at the forefront of legal practice and legal dispute resolution.

In IIUM, the idea of law lab is institutionally designed and represented in a few initiatives: Firstly, through required academic courses that had to be registered by the students in various levels of their studies, according to the prescribed study plan. Secondly, it is reflected in the establishment of the IIUM Legal Clinic, now named the Legal Aid Services. Thirdly, the law lab is achieved through students’ activities, which include legal moot competition, client consultation competition, legal aid club, etc.

These are the experiences I shared with the audience at this beautiful event by the UINSA Surabaya. I hope they will continue developing the legal lab and legal clinic programmes in the near future. I am personally looking forward to establishing more collaboration between them and IIUM.

This topic was presented at the International Conference on Sharia and Law (ICOSLAW) 2022, held by the Faculty of Sharia and Law, Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sunan Ampel Surabaya, Indonesia on 4th August, 2022.
